【Car owner’s home car knowledge】In the process of our daily maintenance, we usually hand the car directly to the 4S store. When changing the oil, the after-sales staff will ask about the type of oil used: mineral oil, semi-synthetic or fully synthetic oil. I believe that many car owners do not know the meaning of those engine oil labels. Next, the author will briefly introduce to you the functions, categories and meanings of engine oil labels.

●The function of engine oil

As we all know, the engine is like the heart of a car. There are many metal surfaces that rub against each other inside. When the piston moves, each component moves very fast and the environment is poor. The internal temperature can reach 400°C to 600°C. Under such harsh working conditions, only qualified lubricants can reduce the wear of engine parts and extend their service life. So what requirements should qualified lubricants meet?

Lubrication and anti-wear

There is rapid relative sliding between the piston and the cylinder, and between the main shaft and the bearing bush. To prevent excessive wear of parts, an oil film needs to be established between the two sliding surfaces. An oil film of sufficient thickness separates the surfaces of relatively sliding parts, thereby reducing wear.

The oil can bring heat back to the oil tank and then dissipate it into the air to help the water tank cool the engine, playing an auxiliary cooling role.

cleaning clean

Good-quality engine oil can bring carbides, sludge, and wear metal particles on engine parts back to the oil tank through circulation, and through the flow of lubricating oil, it can achieve the purpose of flushing dirt from the working surfaces of the parts.

Sealed and leak-proof

Engine oil can form a sealing ring between the piston ring and the piston, reducing gas leakage and preventing external contaminants from entering.

Anti-rust and anti-corrosion

Lubricating oil can be absorbed on the surface of parts, preventing water, air, acidic substances and harmful gases from coming into contact with parts, and plays a role in preventing rust and corrosion.

Shock absorbing buffer

When the pressure at the engine cylinder port rises sharply, the load on the piston, piston pin, connecting rod and crankshaft bearing is intensified. This load is transmitted and lubricated by the bearing, so that the load is buffered, thus playing a role of shock absorption.
