▍Cycling experience
Gwangyang's flagship model is undoubtedly the AK 550, equipped with a 550cc four-stroke twin-cylinder engine that can bring excellent driving pleasure. But how does it perform? We use test data to reveal the answer for you.
▍Power and torque
Maximum horsepower on wheels: 41.29 hp (7100 rpm)
Maximum torque on the wheel: 45.49 N·m (5780 rpm)
Compared with the Yamaha TMax, the benchmark model of the same level, the Gwangyang AK 550 horsepower is slightly better and has better high-rev performance, but the maximum torque is slightly lower. However, this engine still performs well, with plenty of power, quick response, and great driving pleasure.
▍Acceleration and top speed
- Top speed: 162.4 km/h
- 0-100 km/h acceleration: 6.80 seconds
- 0-400 meters acceleration: 15.20 seconds
- 0-1000 meters acceleration: 29.36 seconds
- 1km acceleration from 50km/h: 27.04 seconds
▍Brake performance
- 100 km/h-0 braking distance: 37.0 meters
▍Fuel consumption performance
As a performance scooter, it is expected that the fuel consumption is higher than that of ordinary mobility scooters, but considering its displacement and performance, the actual fuel consumption performance is quite reasonable. Of course, there is a significant difference in fuel consumption between smooth driving and violent riding.
Conversion results of fuel consumption per 100 kilometers - Highway conditions: 5.06 liters/100 kilometers - Suburban road conditions: 3.42 liters/100 kilometers - 90 km/h Constant speed: 4.05 liters/100 kilometers - 120 km/h Constant speed: 5.03 liters/100 kilometers - Top speed: 9.63 liters/100 kilometers
The vehicle’s fuel tank capacity is 13 liters, and its maximum cruising range under different working conditions is
- 120 km/h constant speed: 258 km
- Top speed: 135 kilometers
▍Vehicle structure
Among large-displacement scooters, the AK 550 is considered a "benchmark". Its appearance design is in line with the current trend, and its technical configuration is also quite advanced. It is equipped with a parallel twin-cylinder long-stroke engine with an actual displacement of 550.1cc (bore × stroke: 69.0 × 73.6 mm). It adopts a double overhead camshaft, four-valve structure per cylinder, and is equipped with an oil-bath multi-plate clutch, a continuously variable transmission system and a toothed belt final drive. Electronic fuel injection and electronic ignition systems are standard on this class of models.
▍Storage and chassis
The space under the seat can accommodate a full-face helmet and other items. The frame is made of aluminum alloy, and the braking system reaches superbike level. The engine is fixed on the aluminum alloy frame (instead of the swinging design of ordinary pedals). The suspension system follows the motorcycle configuration: the front suspension is a 41 mm diameter upright front fork, and the rear suspension is a single rocker shock absorber.
The tire and brake specifications are well matched: the front tire is 120/70-R15, equipped with dual 270mm Brembo brake discs; the rear tire is 160/60-R15, equipped with a 260mm brake disc (also used as a parking brake). The braking system is controlled by Bosch 9.1 dual-channel ABS, and the AK 550 Premium version is also equipped with a cornering ABS function.
▍Body size
The body size shows the true nature of a large-displacement pedal: length 2200 mm, width 795 mm, height 1450 mm, and a wheelbase of 1580 mm. The two-stage seat height is 790 mm, and with the narrow side design, even drivers of average height can easily put their feet on the ground.
▍Model version
Standard version: The design is more sporty, and the air deflector has better aerodynamic effect, but the wind protection is not comprehensive enough.
Premium version: Provides comprehensive wind protection.
The seats of both models have the same sitting posture and are reasonably designed, which can not only drive comfortably, but also assist high-speed driving through body posture; the seats are adjustable front and back, and the backrest can be adjusted to three different angles during long-distance riding to improve comfort.
▍Curving performance
Driving in corners is the highlight of the AK 550, which brings many surprises. The slender body ensures excellent stability and is most suitable for medium-to-high-speed continuous curved road conditions of 70-100 km/h. The vehicle's center of gravity balance is excellent, and the low center of gravity design makes control easier. Surprisingly, despite its long wheelbase, it can shuttle flexibly on narrow roads and only needs more effort to maneuver when making sharp turns. The engine is not only powerful, but the smoothness of its transmission system also allows the driver to accurately control power output under various working conditions. The braking system performs equally well, and this level of configuration is enough to support its performance.
▍Urban commuting performance
The larger body size will cause inconvenience in congested road conditions, but the smooth response of the engine and chassis can still keep the driver comfortable when riding in urban areas.
