2026 Mazda CX-5 real car debuts, with upgraded performance and 2.5L engine

In February 2026, Mazda released a new generation of CX-5, which was also the first major update since 2022. The appearance is completely new, but the power system is still equipped with the 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine, matched with a 6AT gearbox. In today's trend of most SUVs switching to turbocharging or hybridization, Mazda still adheres to the traditional route. However, Mazda still allows the system to retain the "driver-driven" setting, emphasizing the control feeling of holding the steering wheel instead of completely letting the vehicle drive automatically.

Power is the focus of this controversy. The entire series still provides the same 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine with an output of 187 horsepower and a 6AT. Mazda claims it has high thermal efficiency, excellent low-speed response, and a smooth and linear driving experience. But in today's SUV market, consumers are more concerned about fuel consumption, quietness and comfort. Turbine and hybrid have become mainstream. Mazda's insistence on self-priming means that it is betting that those who prefer a pure driving experience are willing to buy it.

The official plan is to launch a mild hybrid version in 2027. It is not a plug-in type, has a small battery capacity, and has a limited pure electric driving range. Its main function is to save fuel and improve starting performance. This is obviously a transitional solution, which is to retain the driving characteristics of fuel vehicles while meeting emission regulations. Toyota RAV4 Prime, Honda CR-V hybrid and other models have achieved good sales, and Europe's plan to ban the sale of fuel vehicles in 2035 is approaching. Mazda is still focusing on fuel versions at this time, which makes people speculate whether it is fully confident or delaying its transformation. Today, the brand's appeal seems increasingly limited to those who truly love driving.
